Ludwig Hoelscher (cello) and Elly Ney (piano) were among Europe's finest classical musicians, and this 1959 Telefunken recording captures them in intimate partnership on two of Beethoven's most eloquent chamber works. The Op. 69 sonata, written during Beethoven's middle period, flows with lyrical grace and structural clarity, while the later Op. 102,1 probes deeper emotional territory with searching dialogue between instruments. The seven variations on Mozart's "Bei Männern, Welche Liebe Fühlen" add lighter relief. Hoelscher's warm, singing cello tone and Ney's sensitive accompaniment make this a quietly compelling reading of music that rewards close listening. A significant document of mid-century German chamber music performance.
