Applications and functionalities

This interface cable is aimed at fundamental engine management diagnostics via standard OBD2 protocols. Available functions depend on the software used on the connected system.

• Read and clear fault codes (DTCs): Requesting active and stored diagnostic trouble codes from the engine control unit and the ability to reset the Check Engine Light (MIL) after repair.
• Stream live data (PID monitoring): Reading and graphically displaying sensor values in real time such as mass air flow (MAF), intake pressure (MAP), lambda sensor voltage, and coolant temperature.
• View Freeze Frame Data: Retrieving a snapshot of engine parameters at the exact moment an emission-related fault code was generated by the ECU.
• Check I/M Readiness status: Reading the status of the vehicle's emission monitors, which is relevant for checking system readiness for inspections.

Special features and capabilities

The hardware of the ELM327 V1.5 is designed for broad compatibility within established EOBD/OBD2 standards.

• V1.5 Protocol Translation: The chip automatically converts physical network signals (such as voltage differences on CAN lines) into standardized hexadecimal data that can be processed by serial ports via USB.
• Support for SAE J1850: Unlike V2.1 interfaces, the V1.5 version includes the necessary hardware components to communicate via J1850 VPW and PWM, which is crucial for older Ford and GM vehicles.
• Baud rate auto-detection: The interface cable automatically negotiates the correct communication speed (baud rate) with the vehicle's ECU to establish a stable data connection.

Compatible vehicles

This universal interface cable is not brand-specific but designed for compatibility with all vehicles that comply with legal OBD2/EOBD standards.

General compatibility:

• European gasoline vehicles: Compatible from model year 2001 (introduction of EOBD).
• European diesel vehicles: Compatible from model year 2004 (introduction of EOBD).
• American vehicles (US-market): Compatible from model year 1996 (introduction of OBD2).

Compatible software and operating systems

The cable provides only the physical connection and protocol translation and fully depends on third-party diagnostic software to visualize data and send commands.

Compatible software:

• ScanMaster-ELM: For general OBD2 diagnostics, graphical display of live data, and reading fault codes.
• FORScan (Windows): Basic functions for Ford/Mazda vehicles (no MS-CAN support on this standard cable unless physically modified).
• MultiECUScan: For engine management diagnostics on Fiat group vehicles (additional colored adapter cables may be required).

Operating systems:

• Windows: XP, 7, 8, 10, and 11 (requires assignment of a COM port in Device Manager).
