The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is a non-isolated DC-DC battery-to-battery charger designed for 12V vehicle and marine dual-battery systems. It delivers up to 30A (360W) of charge current and is managed via Bluetooth using the VictronConnect app, making it suitable for professional van conversions, motorhomes, narrowboats and off-grid mobile installations.
The Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated range uses a synchronous buck converter topology. Because input and output share a common negative, this unit is suited to installations where both battery banks are in the same chassis ground system, which is the standard arrangement in most road vehicles and inland waterway craft. The non-isolated design is more efficient than a fully isolated converter at this power level, which matters when the unit is running continuously during long drives or extended generator charging sessions.
Configuration is handled entirely through VictronConnect over Bluetooth. Charge voltage, absorption time, float voltage and tail current can all be set to match the service battery chemistry. For lithium service batteries, the two-wire BMS port allows the BMS to signal the Orion-Tr Smart to stop charging when the battery is full or a cell protection event occurs. Engine detection is based on input voltage threshold: the unit only charges when the alternator raises the bus voltage above a configurable level, protecting the starter battery from depletion.
At 1.8 kg and with a compact footprint, the unit can be mounted in an engine bay, under a seat or in a battery compartment. It is designed for continuous duty at full rated current within its specified ambient temperature range.

This unit is non-isolated and requires a shared negative between the source and service battery banks. It is not suitable for installations where the two battery systems must be electrically separated, such as most marine applications with separate AC grounding. Wiring should be sized for the full 30A output current with appropriate fusing on both input and output cables as close to the battery terminals as practicable. For lithium service batteries, connect the BMS remote port to ensure charge cutoff on cell protection events. Installation should be carried out by a qualified auto-electrician or marine electrician familiar with dual-battery systems and the relevant wiring regulations.
