WHAT IS A COMMONPLACE BOOK

A commonplace book is a personal collection of ideas worth keeping. It gathers sentences, insights, and questions that shape the way you think. Instead of recording what happened today, you preserve what moved you, challenged you, or changed you.

For centuries, readers and thinkers kept such books as personal knowledge vaults. Greek and Roman thinkers kept written reflections, as did the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, whose Meditations reflect a similar practice. During the Renaissance, scholars carefully copied meaningful passages so wisdom would not be lost. Among those who kept commonplace books were John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, John Milton, Francis Bacon, Leonardo da Vinci, Virginia Woolf, Mark Twain, and John D. Rockefeller.
