Notes

The Vicar of Wakefield (1766) by Oliver Goldsmith is a sentimental novel that tells the story of Dr. Primrose, a kind-hearted but somewhat naïve clergyman, and his family's trials and tribulations. Set in rural 18th-century England, the narrative unfolds as the once-comfortable Primrose family faces a series of misfortunes—including financial ruin, deception, and scandal—before ultimately being restored to happiness and respectability. The novel is known for its gentle satire, moral themes, and commentary on virtue, hypocrisy, and resilience, reflecting the values of its time while also offering a charming portrait of domestic life.

An especially beloved illustrated edition of The Vicar of Wakefield was published in 1929, featuring artwork by Arthur Rackham, one of the most celebrated illustrators of the early 20th century. Rackham brought the story to life with his signature style—detailed, atmospheric, and slightly whimsical illustrations that added emotional depth and visual charm to the novel. His illustrations captured both the innocence and the drama of the narrative, enhancing the reader’s experience and helping to renew interest in Goldsmith’s classic. This edition remains a collector’s favorite, admired for the way Rackham’s art complements the sentimental and moral tone of Goldsmith’s prose.
