This intriguing late 19th-century locket pendant, crafted from 9K gold, takes the form of a small book, opening horizontally to reveal a hidden compartment. The front of the locket is intricately engraved with swirling motifs, framing two Masonic symbols: a blue enamelled bell and a compass with square, traditional symbols of the Freemasons. The compass represents moral compass, and the square symbolises virtue, core tenets of Freemasonry. This type of locket was likely worn by a Freemason, symbolising their connection to the fraternity and its principles of brotherhood, integrity, and enlightenment.
Inside, a glass pane holds a lock of hair, a memento of a loved one. This keepsake could be removed and replaced with a photo or another personal token, allowing the new owner to carry a meaningful reminder close to their heart. The locket is well-preserved, with expected wear and minor knocks on the edges, and its lock mechanism remains fully functional.
It measures 23mm by 17mm and weighs 6.14 grams. The bale is a gold tone metal replacement. The locket is unmarked but tests as 9K gold.
A beautiful and symbolic piece of Masonic history, this locket combines personal sentiment with the storied heritage of Freemasonry.
