About this piece

The Roomse Roffel-Pot is a satirical depiction of the losses suffered by the Pope and Emperor Ferdinand II of Germany, contrasted with the gains of Frederick, King of Bohemia. The Elector of Saxony pulls a cart carrying a cage with a plucked eagle, atop which the Pope sits playing a hurdy-gurdy. Accompanying them is a group of musicians including the Emperor, a Jesuit, and Spinola. On the left, Frederick is having feathers sewn onto his mantle, symbolizing his newfound power. To the right, visitors at an inn discuss these events. The print is accompanied by a separate text sheet featuring a conversation between two farmers and a bookseller, along with a legend A-O in three columns in Dutch.
