Why test for Nitrate and Nitrite?

This test detects Nitrate and Nitrite measured as Nitrogen (NO3-N & NO2-N). Nitrate and Nitrite find their way into drinking water from farm fertilizer, industrial and biological waste, and naturally forming mineral deposits. Their presence can often be a sign of other pollutants in the water. Nitrate (NO3-N) levels above 10ppm are linked to “blue baby syndrome” in infants. The EPA sets the limit for Nitrate (NO3-N) at 10ppm; the limit for Nitrite (NO2-N) is 1ppm. Nitrite (NO2-N) levels above the EPA limit can be an indicator that bacteria are present. The WHO guideline value for Nitrate (NO3) is 50 mg/L and for Nitrite (NO2) 3mg/L.
