This is a classic Penny Red postage stamp of Great Britain, issued in 1864 during the reign of Queen Victoria. Printed in a rich red shade, it features the left-facing profile of the Queen, engraved by Perkins, Bacon & Co. The design includes corner letters—in this example “J R”—used to identify plate positions. The heavy black cancellation, bearing numeral “99”, is a barred oval obliterator used for postal markings.
The Penny Red replaced the famous Penny Black (1840), remaining in use for decades due to its practicality and widespread adoption. Collectors prize these stamps for their plate varieties, corner lettering, and cancellation types. Despite being common in lower grades, well-centered or rare plate numbers command significant value in philately.
