This is a United Kingdom 1d Red stamp, popularly known as the Penny Red, issued in the mid-19th century as a successor to the famous Penny Black. Featuring a left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, the design is surrounded by a diamond lattice pattern with check letters in the lower corners (in this example, "G–A"). Unlike the imperforate early issues, this one is perforated 16, introduced in 1854 for easier separation.
The Penny Red remained in circulation for decades and is a cornerstone of classic British philately, with over 21 billion printed. Plate identification and cancellation marks (such as the black numeral obliterator seen here) are key to determining rarity and value. Well-centered and clear examples from scarcer plates are especially prized by collectors.
