This Rwandan postage stamp, issued in 1963, commemorates the Centenary of the First Vatican Council (1869–1870). It features a sepia-toned portrait of Pope Paul VI, who was elected in the same year and played a major role in continuing the reforms of Vatican II. The stamp bears the inscription “CENTENAIRE DE VATICAN I” along with the papal emblem, symbolizing Rwanda’s recognition of this historic event in Catholic tradition. A low denomination of 10 centimes, it was part of a series highlighting the close ties between the Rwandan Republic and the Holy See. This issue is valued by collectors for its religious, historical, and African philatelic significance.
