• The Stone: Three black stones, three different characters. The polished beads are black tourmaline, a crystalline mineral that grew slowly under heat and pressure deep underground. Its surface is glossy and smooth with a depth that catches light. The matte beads are obsidian, which is volcanic glass with its shine stripped back to a soft, velvety finish. The rough, cratered beads are lava stone. This is solid volcanic rock still showing the gas bubbles that were trapped inside as it cooled. Three origins, three textures, one color. At the center sits a vermeil gold logo bead, featuring 3.5 microns of pure 24kt gold over sterling silver.
• History: Black tourmaline has been known since ancient times. Dutch traders in the 1700s called it "ash puller" because when heated, it develops an electrical charge strong enough to attract dust and ash. It is one of the few stones that naturally generates a charge through heat and pressure. Ancient magicians used it as a shield against negative forces. Obsidian has been worked by humans for at least 700,000 years. When broken, it produces an edge sharper than any modern steel razor blade. The Aztecs called it itztli and embedded it into weapons that could inflict wounds steel could not match. Lava stone, as basalt, is one of the most widely used building materials in human history. The Romans paved their roads with it, and the Egyptians carved it into temple floors. The famous Rosetta Stone is also made of basalt.
• The Belief: In modern crystal practice, black tourmaline is one of the strongest protective stones, said to absorb and deflect negative energy. Obsidian is said to strengthen truth and the ability to confront what is hidden. Lava stone is said to strengthen courage and grounding during periods of change.
