502nd Infantry Regiment — A Heritage Forged in Combat

Established in the crucible of World War II, the 502nd PIR jumped into Normandy on D-Day, held the line at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and never stopped fighting. Reactivated and redesignated as an Air Assault regiment in 1974, the 502nd has since deployed to Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan — always at the tip of the spear.

The 1st Battalion carries that standard today, conducting heliborne assaults, direct action missions, and counterinsurgency operations as part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
