This is a classic Great Britain Queen Victoria "Penny Red" stamp, issued in 1854 as a successor to the famous Penny Black. Printed in red on white paper, it features the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon, based on the same portrait as the Penny Black.
This example has the corner check letters "K–A", which uniquely identify its position on the printed sheet. The stamp is perforated (Perf 16), which distinguishes it from the earlier imperforate Penny Reds (1841–1854). The heavy black cancellation obscures much of the portrait but reflects genuine postal use, adding to its postal history value.
The Penny Red remained in circulation for decades and is a cornerstone of British philately. Collectors prize it for its numerous plate varieties, perforation differences, and cancellation marks, all of which help to date and classify individual copies.
