The WAC was converted to full active-duty status on July 1, 1943, under the command of its first director, Oveta Culp Hobby — a trailblazer in both military and civilian life. WAC members served in every theater of the war and continued their service through the Vietnam Era, earning the National Defense Service Medal for their commitment during a period of national conflict. The corps was officially disbanded in 1978, its units fully integrated — a quiet acknowledgment that women had always belonged.
