This 50 centimes stamp from the Belgian Congo (Belgisch Congo Belge) features the Galago, commonly known as the bush baby, a nocturnal primate native to Africa. The design showcases the animal perched on a tree branch against a deep blue forest background. Printed by Courvoisier S.A., the stamp was designed by J. Van Noten. After Congo’s independence in 1960, many Belgian Congo issues were overprinted with the word “CONGO” in red, as seen here, to extend their postal validity. This transitional overprint marks the shift from colonial to independent postal history, making it especially desirable for collectors of African independence-era philately.
