Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an ancient herb used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Also known as “Indian ginseng” or “winter cherry,” it is a small shrub with yellow flowers, native to India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. The root of the plant is the part most commonly used in herbal preparations.

Traditionally, ashwagandha is known for its ability to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support overall vitality. Its valuable properties include: adaptogen, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immune amphoteric, antitumor, nervine, antispasmodic, and chemoprotective activity.

Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen, a type of herb or natural substance that helps the body adapt to physical, emotional, and environmental stress. Adaptogens work by supporting balance in the body, particularly in the adrenal system and the production of stress hormones like cortisol

Ashwagandha may offer a wide range of benefits for both dogs and cats when used appropriately. 

1. Stress and Anxiety Relief: Ashwagandha can help calm pets with anxiety, nervousness, or stress. It may be useful for pets with separation anxiety, fear of loud noises (like fireworks), or general nervous behaviours.

2. Support for Aging Pets: This herb has neuroprotective properties, making it potentially helpful for senior pets showing signs of cognitive decline or dementia. It may improve memory, focus, and mental alertness.

3. Immune System Support: Ashwagandha has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that support the immune system. This can be beneficial for pets recovering from illness or experiencing chronic inflammation.

4. Hormonal and Adrenal Support: By regulating cortisol levels and supporting adrenal gland function, ashwagandha helps maintain hormonal balance. This may be particularly helpful for pets dealing with adrenal fatigue or Cushing’s disease (with guidance from a vet).

• Is on sedatives or medications for anxiety or blood pressure
• Has a scheduled surgery (ashwagandha may act as a mild sedative)
• Is intolerant of heat (ashwagandha has heating properties)
