Black Sabbath Self-Titled Debut Album
Order the Black Sabbath Self-Titled Debut album now, available on vinyl record at Benja Records. This is the first LP by the fathers of heavy metal, and by extension the first album in the genre. Some debate this, however. During the late 60s and early seventies, acid rock and hard rock bands were racing to create the heaviest sound they possibly could, and it could be argued that Black Sabbath's record was another part in this incremental change. However, many of those heavier bands, which hard for their time, did not sound nearly as massive or foreboding as the doom metal masterpiece that is the Self-titled 'Black Sabbath' song. The five minute tritone dirge fuelled by sleep paralysis and occult imagery presented something leagues darker and larger than any of their contemporaries, ostensibly pushing the heaviness race forwards half a decade. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be around in 1970 to hear this for the first time. The rest of the record is great, with meaty riffage coming out of classic tracks like 'The Wizard' and 'N.I.B.', which also display the merits of the band's excellent rhythm section in Bill Ward and Geezer Butler.
