This rare stomacher for a Biedermeier dress, dating to ca. 1840, is a beautifully preserved example of mid‑19th‑century German fashion. Stomachers of this period were decorative front panels worn with bodices, continuing a tradition that had evolved over centuries from the Baroque and Rococo eras into the more restrained aesthetics of the Biedermeier period.

This example features cream‑coloured lace set against a vivid red background, creating a striking contrast typical of the era’s taste for refined yet expressive textile combinations. It is further embellished with nile‑blue silk bows, all of which appear original, along with the original ribbons used for fastening. The reverse side displays a typical Biedermeier fabric, confirming its period authenticity. The stomacher retains its conical form, echoing earlier 18th‑century silhouettes while adapting to the softer lines of 1840s dressmaking.
