Meticulously engraved with interwoven, traditional Japanese motifs, Shimizu Glass Co.’s Sasa glassware is a sterling example of Edo kiriko cut glass from masters of the ancient art form, who have been practicing it for more than 100 years.
It is blown and cut entirely by hand by a team of exceptional glassmakers in a small workshop in Tokyo, who produce the glass’s notched foot not in the blowing process, but with a deep cut, while its rich burgundy coloration comes from blending copper particles into the glass. The intricate patterning features two timeless Japanese motifs: a band of ““kagome,” motif evokes basketweaving—a symbol of protection, and the “sasa” pattern evoking bamboo leaves—a symbol of good luck.
Care Instructions: Hand wash only.
Each piece is individually handmade, and natural variations in color, texture, and finish are to be expected and celebrated.
