Alocasia baginda ‘Dragon Scale Mint’ is a rare mint-variegated selection of Alocasia baginda, originally derived from the Borneo group of jewel Alocasias. This cultivar retains the heavily bullate, scale-textured foliage characteristic of the Dragon Scale lineage but introduces a soft mint-green overlay across the lamina. 

The leaves are thick, ovate to broadly sagittate, with pronounced, raised primary and secondary venation. The surface has a matte, almost suede-like appearance. In ‘Dragon Scale Mint’, the typical deep emerald interveinal tissue is diluted into pale jade to cool mint tones, often contrasted by darker green venation. The undersides are usually pale green to silvery, lacking the strong purple tones seen in some other baginda forms.

This is a compact-growing jewel Alocasia, typically reaching 30–50 cm in height under cultivation. Petioles are relatively short and sturdy, proportionate to the leaf blade, and usually light green without significant patterning.

Due to its variegated mint expression, growth is generally slower than the standard ‘Dragon Scale’. Stable mint colouration depends on high light (without direct sun) and optimal root health.

Light

Bright indirect light is essential. This cultivar requires higher light levels than standard green Alocasia baginda to maintain strong mint expression.

• Avoid direct sun, which will scorch the leaf surface.

• Insufficient light results in darker foliage and reduced variegation.

Temperature

Optimal range: 18–28°C.

• Avoid temperatures below 15°C.

• Cold stress can trigger dormancy or root decline.

Humidity

Prefers 60–80% humidity.

• Below 50% may cause edge crisping and slowed growth.

• Ideal for greenhouse or controlled indoor environments.

Watering

Keep the substrate consistently lightly moist but never waterlogged.

• Allow the top 2–3 cm of mix to dry slightly between waterings.

• Do not allow the plant to sit in water.

• Overwatering is the primary cause of failure due to rhizome and root rot.

Substrate

Requires a very well-aerated, free-draining mix.
Recommended components:

• Fine orchid bark

• Perlite or pumice

• Coco peat or peat moss (moderate proportion)

• Small amount of horticultural charcoal (optional)

The root system is compact and sensitive to compaction; oxygen availability is critical.

Fertiliser

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth (spring–summer).
Reduce feeding significantly during cooler months.
