Description:
A collection of works by composer Naresh Sohal, born in 1939 in the Punjab region of India and now based in England. Sohal, who showed an interest in popular music as a child, was a rock and roll performer, but majored in science and mathematics at college. He showed interest in physics but eventually decided to pursue a career in music, and in Mumbai (Bombay) he was impressed by Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, after which he became a self-taught composer. Sohal's works, which paved the way for internationally recognized Indian composers in the field of classical music, attempt to express the worldview of Hindu philosophy in a Western musical idiom. This album contains piano pieces and piano trios written between 1974 and 2007. The piano pieces, especially those with a dense sound reminiscent of Xenakis, are a must-hear. The piece entitled "Tsunami," which was premiered at the Dartington International Festival in August 2007, is a piece that evokes the threat of nature based on a terrific bass tone. Naxos Japan
