About the Photoshoot

Many Icelanders say their country has only two seasons—summer and winter—where fall and spring pass by almost unnoticed. I disagree. Though Iceland’s seasonal transitions are brief, they reveal moments of profound beauty.

This image was captured during one such fleeting instance at Hraunfossar waterfall. As I departed Reykjavik, bright skies gave way to snow showers, threatening to mask autumn’s hues before I could reach the falls. Upon arrival, however, the snowfall lightened, leaving a delicate dusting over the orange and gold foliage, perfectly framing the autumnal scene I sought.

With long exposure, I highlighted three evenly spaced rivulets flowing over the dark lava rock, leading the viewer’s eye through the vibrant colors and conveying the quiet yet persistent movement of water. This moment, capturing autumn’s richness before the deep cold of winter, was as rare as it was breathtaking.

About Hraunfossar

Hraunfossar, or “Lava Falls,” is a wonder of Iceland’s west, flowing gently over a lava shelf rather than dramatically plunging off cliffs. Unlike Iceland’s towering waterfalls, Hraunfossar’s streams spill across the lava’s edge in thousands of small rivulets, lined with Icelandic birch trees and low shrubs. In autumn, this scene is adorned with striking gold and orange tones, setting Hraunfossar apart as a uniquely photogenic location where Iceland’s fall colors shine brightest.
