NBNY: Intelligent deer management today asks us to think of each shot taken as a personal investment in a sustainable ecosystem and continuing the deer hunting tradition.

Nice Buck Next Year (NBNY) began as a simple idea shared between Doug and his younger brother Matt, who was deeply devoted to hunting whitetails on their family farm in southwest Wisconsin. As deer numbers surged through the 1980s and early ’90s, the brothers became influenced by emerging deer-management principles and encouraged passing younger bucks while taking more does. After Matt’s passing, the family honored his legacy through the NBNY philosophy—aiming for healthier herds and better deer hunting. But even with selective harvest, the region’s booming deer population continued to grow, and when CWD was detected south of the farm in 2002, it reshaped deer management. Increased antlerless harvest requirements and expanded seasons helped reduce herd size and slow disease spread- until political pressure reversed these efforts. Deer numbers rose again, and CWD prevalence followed.

As testing continued on the Duren farm, CWD slowly took hold; by 2024, 42% of harvested deer tested positive. The lesson was undeniable: reducing herd size is essential to limiting disease spread and preserving herd quality. The NBNY ethos has since evolved-focusing less on protecting young bucks and more on harvesting any deer, especially antlerless deer, while continuing herd testing. The path forward is clear: thoughtful, science-based management can create smaller, healthier herds with more mature deer- including good bucks- and ensure a stronger future for deer hunting.
