Andrew Hill (who’s sensational Black Fire has already received the Tone poet treatment) maintains a firm place amongst the best kept secrets in jazz. That’s what happens when you’re more inclined to write/compose for your friends (despite being a brilliant pianist) and especially when those friends comprise a six-piece horn section, a rarity at the time. Like Black Fire, all the compositions here are originals and, even though their recording took place in 1969, were not released until 2003. Why? Who knows. Rudy’s a busy man. Sometimes things slip through the cracks. And sometimes they are rediscovered, pressed, and reissued on beautiful, low surface 180g vinyl.
