Description:
Two of Dvorak's lighter orchestral works from the lovingly expressed and joyful Dvorak Philips album, two of Dvorak's masterpieces. The String Serenade is the world's first CD release. Sir Colin Davis always showed a special affection for Dvořák's music. He made this album in March 1968, after a difficult period in the troubled early 1960s, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra with whom he had a long and fruitful relationship. The Serenade for Strings, composed by Dvořák in 1876, a year before he composed the Symphonic Variations, is a work that is full of love from every measure. This was a happy time for the composer, who was often struck by misfortune and personal events that year. The Fifth Symphony and String Quintet No. 2 share the same sense of joy. The rhythms of Czech and Viennese dances abound, and they are softly expressed by the string section of the London Symphony Orchestra. Universal Music/IMS
