Description:
When Weir began work on the "ACE" album at Wally Heiders Studio in San Francisco in early 1972, he had no idea that the Grateful Dead would be his backing band, and eventually a natural progression of Dead members came together. Weir commented. I kind of knew in the back of my mind what was going to happen. I booked a studio schedule and started putting the material together there. The guys in the band knew I had a studio, and naturally they knew when I was going to be in the studio. In a way, it made sense for the Dead members to come together to create this piece.Because six of the eight songs on this album, including "Greatest Story Ever Told," "Mexicali Blues," and one of Weir's best-known songs, "Playing In The Band," had been tested with the band during the Dead's tour, and By the time recording began, all members of the band were already familiar with most of the songs. The album ACE also marked the beginning of a long collaboration between Bobby Weir and lyricist John Perry Barlow, and includes the early signature songs "Cassidy" and "Looks Like Rain." (2/2)
